An
education is a set of roadmaps through the complex cities
of human thought, which taken all together can be overwhelming and
almost
unnavigable. Most
of us need a guide to find our way through, not just to
learn, but to put our learning into use a good education is just a
voice
saying, look here, this is important, and here is why... Plato, Aristotle, Dante, Marlowe, Kyd, Shakespeare, Erasmus, Moore, Galileo, Newton, Wollstonecraft, Swift, Browning,
Bronte, Shaw, Wilde,
Wittgenstein, Goethe,
Sartre, Camus,
Nietzsche, Woolf, Eliot, Einstein,
Heisenberg, Hawking
, Thorne, and Kaku, to
name a few, are all
cultural
icons because they have wonderful things to say about the human spirit
and the
nature of the world. Literature,
History, Art, Mathematics, Anthropology, Philosophy,
Music, Poetry, and Physics these are all
inextricably linked together. They are
all part of the story of who we are, where we come from, and where we
are going. They are the poem that is
Humankind. Learning
this poem is part of learning to be human and humane. Wanting
to learn about the world is natural. All
of us are born with the desire, the
hunger to learn, but so many miss out, there are distractions
everywhere. . . My It
is our story; it is the music of our lives. So it goes. .
