How Oxford Can Serve the Homescooling
Community
Oxford
Academics and the homeschooling community are a natural
collaboration. My classroom is designed to pique the student
imagination. In addition to the greatest books in the Western Cannon,
Oxford is littered with scientific instruments, measuring devices,
anatomical models, anthropological skulls. Each piece gives rise to
questions that stimulate the process of intellectual discovery.
For
Homeschooling children, I offer two-hour morning classes from
8-10 and from 10:30-12:30. Specialized courses in Literature, History,
Philosophy, Writing, Mechanics, and Science are available. Parents are
welcome to sit in.
Like
Oxford Academics, Homeschooling arose out of a
general disappointment with the decline in the standards, direction,
and values of the public school system. Overcrowding, a
threadbare curriculum, and an amoral approach to public education have
so
weakened the traditional classroom that schools fail in the principal
responsibility of education: teaching the next generation how to learn.
Most
of us need a guide to find our way through, not just to
learn, but to put our learning into use a good education is just a
voice
saying, look here, this is important, and here is why...
Plato, Aristotle, Dante, Marlowe, Kyd, Shakespeare, Erasmus, Moore, Galileo, Newton, Wollstonecraft, Swift, Browning,
Bronte, Shaw, Wilde,
Wittgenstein, Goethe,
Sartre, Camus, Nietzsche, Woolf, Eliot, Einstein,
Heisenberg, Hawking
, Thorne, and Kaku, to
name a few, are all
cultural
icons because they have wonderful things to say about the human spirit
and the
nature of the world.
Literature,
History, Art, Mathematics, Anthropology, Philosophy,
Music, Poetry, and Physics these are all
inextricably linked together. They are
all part of the story of who we are, where we come from, and where we
are going. They are the poem that is
Humankind. Learning
this poem is part of learning to be human and humane.
Wanting
to learn about the world is natural. All
of us are born with the desire, the
hunger to learn, but so many miss out, there are distractions
everywhere. . .
Oxford
Academics
is a place of focus, a place where, for a moment, the distractions
recede. Here, Literature, History, Art,
Mathematics,
Anthropology, Philosophy, Music, Poetry, and Physics all come together
as part
of the same story.
It
is our story; it is the music of our lives. So it goes. .
